It can be difficult knowing where to start with training for the arb industry. It will largely be dependent on the role you will be undertaking.

If you’re just starting out, you may be in a grounds person role where you will benefit from woodchipper and stumpgrinder courses. You might also consider a chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting course, if you know you don’t want to fell trees in the future. This course would allow you to sned and cut up already felled timber

As you progress, if you want to start felling trees people usually consider the 200mm or CS30/31  first. The 200mm is ideal for those who only want to fell small trees occasionally, such as landscapers, gardeners or farmers, but please note you can’t add further modules to this course such as felling larger trees. If you want to become a tree surgeon, working in a professional capacity then you’ll want to start with Level 2 award in chainsaw maintenance, crosscutting, felling & processing trees to 380mm diameter commonly referred to as modules CS30 & CS31.

If you want to work with larger or more complex trees, you might look at adding more modules such as CS32 (trees 380 – 750mm diameter), assisted felling and individual windblown trees, CS40 (tree pruning), CS41.(tree rigging) And when you’re ready to climb trees you’ll need CS38 tree climbing and aerial rescue and the CS39 using a chainsaw in a tree with freefall techniques.

If you are looking to become a tree surveyor you might be interested in the Basic Tree Survey and Inspection course, followed by the Professional Tree Inspection (PTI) course. Again, if you’d like to climb the trees, to inspect the canopies or look at bird and bat boxes, then it’s the CS38.

And, of course, everyone would benefit from a first aid qualification, in the arb industry you might be particularly interested in the +F first aid course, which is often a pre-requisite for work on Forestry Commission sites.
